KINDS of GENRE

When I studied about English in junior or senior high school, we always know and be learned about all kinds of genre inside. This genre is so different each other and like as “tipe kalimat baku” in Indonesia. They are narration, report, direction, news item, description, hortatory, anecdote, and etc. When we get material in this case, sometimes we will have a homework from our teacher to find and to analyze what is a part of that genre. In this post, I want give for examples about it although it just some items from all of the genre in English. (just share experience)

The explanation of narration type :

ROTI ISLAND

Long ago, there lived on the island of Roti an old woman and her grandson. They lived in an old hut since there was nobody to take care of them. What had happened to the grandson’s parents, the grandmother did not speak about.

To obtain a livelihood, they grew some crops behind their hut. But for other food the grandmother had to go to the sea every day, to catch some fish. Every time the grandmother went out fishing, the boy was not allowed to go with her. “Please, Granny, let me go with you. I would like to catch fish too”.

“No, my child,” was her reply. “Don’t go with me! It is too dangerous. Stay at home and cook the rice for us. Take only one grain, that what you will do.”

He went to the kitchen, wondering to himself: “Why, is there only one grain? It’s funny that Granny thinks like that. How can it be? No, surely not.” So when he put the rice pot on the fire, he took several handfuls of rice, as he doubted the truth of what his grandmother had said. He washed the rice, put it in the pot, and waited till it was done. When he thought that it was time to take the pot off the fire, he lifted the lid.

“Goodness!” he exclaimed. “What’s happening?” For just as he lifted the lid, a stream of hot porridge flowed out of the pot. It kept flowing over the floor, out of the kitchen, and then across the back yard. In tears the boy went looking for his grandmother as he could not understand what had happened. When he found her and told her what he had done, she grew angry. She took hold of a piece of wood and beat him hard on the head with it till he was black and blue and howling loudly in pain.

No matter what the boy said, begging for forgiveness, the grandmother did not relent and kept beating him to teach him obedience. But quite suddenly she was sure that she had been holding him firmly by the arm, but now he was gone. Then, while she was still searching for him, she heard a voice saying: “Goodbye, Granny! You are alone now. There will be nobody to help you from now on.” Then, the voice disappeared. From that time on, the people of Roti have never beaten their children or any other people on the head.

Orientation :

Complication & Resolution :

Complication 1 : Every time when the grandmother went out fishing, her grandson would like to catch fish too.

Resolution 1 : Grandmother worried and not gave him allow for go with her, its too dangerous. She want her grandson stay at home and cook rice with only one grain.

Complication 2 : Her grandson wondering and try put the rice pot on the fire with several handfuls of rice which it was washed. Then he wait till it was done.

Resolution 2 : A stream of hot porridge flowed out of the pot when he lifted the lid. It kept flowing over the floor, out of the kitchen, and then across the back yard.

Complication 3 : Grandson confused and he looking for his grandmother. He told his grandmother what he had done after he found her.

Resolution 3 : Grandmother grew angry and beat him hard on the head with a piece of wood. After this moment, she ever heard a voice said “Goodbye, Granny! You are alone now. There will be nobody to help you now on.” And from that time on, the people of Roti have never beaten their children or any other people on the head
